Treadmills are expensive so it is important for you to be a knowledgeable buyer!  We hope to present enough information to help you make your purchasing decision.

We have tried and reviewed many of the most popular treadmill brands and models.

When you purchase a treadmill you need to look at what features are most important to you and make sure you get what you really want!

  • Size and weight of user.  For taller users you will want a longer belt.  Heavier users need to look for higher end treadmill capable of your weight.  When you are talking 400lbs or more you will probably be looking at a commercial/club quality treadmill.
  • What is your budget?  Determine this and be realistic with the features and quality you require, don’t buy a  machine that you’ll probably leave for junk later.  For a mid-level treadmill you will be spending between $1200 - $2400, you probably don’t want to consider anything less than $1000, unless you are planning to mainly use it to hang your laundry on.
  • Where will there machine go, what dimensions can you accommodate?  Are you considering a folding (check out our list of folding treadmills reviewed) or a platform treadmill?
  • The deck and belt are also very important considerations.  You want a tread belt that is 2-ply or greater for longer life.  The deck must have a good shock absorbing system so that there is less stress on your back, knees, joints and feet.
  • Will you be using the machine for walking or running?  If you will be spending considerable time running, the motor must have the capacity for running at low or high speed.   A 2.5 or 3.0 horse power motor is a good start, for a running treadmill.
  • What types of programs will you want your treadmill to have?  Do you want an elaborate console/panel or something simple with only a few programs?
  • What accessories do you want included in your Treadmill?  Do you want it to have a TV (we have reviews of Treadmills with TV’s here)?  Will you want it to have an incline feature, some have automatic incline adjustments depending on the  programs?  This can add intensity and variety to your work out.
  • How about a port for an Ipod and sound system?

One general rule is purchase the highest quality treadmill you can afford.  You do get what you pay for with treadmills and you will not regret buying a quality treadmill.  It is a piece of equipment you should be able to enjoy for many years to come!
